Biometric Security

Biometric security systems use biometric technology to analyse Biological information. One of the most common types of biometric security systems is a fingerprint scanner, which can identify a person by comparing a scan of their fingerprint against a database or prints. Biometric security systems such as a fingerprint scanner can be used in many situations; they are frequently used to restrict access to certain area of a building. Many companies, businesses and institutions use specialised biometric security systems for this end, they can be used in conjunction with electronic locks to ensure that admittance to a room is restricted to people with the appropriate clearance.

Finger print scanners are not the only type of biometric security system available, many different aspects of a person’s physiological make up or behaviour can be analysed by various types of biometric security systems. A person’s voice, retina or face can be scanned and identified by the appropriate biometric security system; however some of these systems can be challenged on ethical grounds. For example, it is considered unacceptable for governments or companies to record information about a persons DNA, or keep a database of retinal scans.

It is also important to note that biometric security systems are not one hundred percent effective and have a small margin of error. For example a biometric security system that identified a person by their face could make an error if presented with two people with a very similar face, which is not uncommon.
